L’atelier de Joel Robuchon Patisserie – Exotic bakes over here with extraordinary sweets!

L’atelier de Joel Robuchon

Near Roppongi station

Even though L’atelier Robuchon has lost its second star for their branch in London (which must have taken a toll on the chef with skies crashing down), its popularity as one of the to-go french restaurants in Asia remains. With so many branches over Asia, spanning from Tokyo, Hong KongSingapore and Taiwan, L’atelier Robuchon does indeed have made a presence here.

Robuchon wasn’t in the food itinerary for this Japan trip, but the intended restaurant near it was and when we stumbled upon this charismatic restaurant and patisserie, we were sucked into it.   Some exotic savoury sandwiches first! These luscious mushroom and peas sandwiches definitely have all they take to deserve a 500 yen price tag! If not for the heavier lunch we had, buying these savouries would have been a no-brainer.   Continue reading

Nemuro Hanamaru 回転寿司 根室花まる – Chuttoro Nigiri for just 300 yen?! And hamburger sushi served?!

回転寿司 根室花まる

DSC_0305It was a slightly longer than 30min wait but at least the queue was moving and so we decided to brave the waiting time on a hungry Friday night here! Nemuro Hanamaru 根室花まる has clearly morphed into one of the more popular Sushi chains in Japan after Midori Sushi has swept across Tokyo as they serve pretty decent Sushi plates at extraordinary prices. How it works here is that the prices of the sushi are indicated by the colour plates they are on.

DSC_0306And once you got your seat seated around the chefs, you would be immersed in the exuding enthusiasm of these chefs as they make an effort to banter with the customers with their hourly new creations!

DSC_0313The chuttoro nigiri was an immediate order with its wicked pricing of about 300 yen for two. Never would you be able to get such pricing anywhere else for a middle fatty tuna slab. Thick and succulent as they may look, they can never be compared to the michelin equivalent that are well-marbled with fats to give a natural melt. Then again, I wouldn’t have asked for more at 300 yen!

DSC_0322The Salmon toro with quail egg was another creative sushi to have as it invigorates you with the heavily packed proteins from the raw quail egg while its yolk combines flawlessly with the chopped salmon to give it a creamy sensation. Continue reading

Haneda airport 百膳 – no calorie-wasting restaurants

Haneda airport  Much closer to Central Tokyo, I have chosen Haneda airport this time round! And just like almost anywhere in Japan, restaurants over here will definitely not disappoint your palates. Famished by the time I got here from Kyoto (yes it’s a pretty long journey totalling about 3h on the tokaido shinkansen, yamanote and monorail lines!), I couldn’t bring myself to the join the long snaking queue of the restaurant beside 百膳! It must have been a famous restaurant from central tokyo and I suspect the people queuing may actually be residents from around that area!

Anyway, 百膳 seemed to serve slightly heavier tasting Japanese food that was what a famished stomach required at that time! So there we go, the flavourfully marinated beef topped with a still-runny yolk that has already just started to thicken and turn viscous.   Still delicious nevertheless, the creamy yolky egg complemented the unami tender beef splendidly when you かき混ぜる with the rice!   And of course not forgetting the beautiful sides we get! One side to take note of is the clear soup with some really thin soba in it. I would have never believed that clear soup from such economical restaurants could taste so good as it always seems that only the Michelin ones will get it right! Clear yet not losing any flavour, I gulped the whole bowl! A seductive 2000 yen for this whole set, this was indeed very good value for money!   And a picture of the floating fujiyama to round off the trip; that was spotted on the tokaido sen back to tokyo! So long Japan, see you in Autumn 2015! And, yes would you expect a long list of Tokyo, Kyoto restaurants coming up soon!

One of the most pleasant shinkansen rides

To have the best shinkansen experience, it really depends on the line you are travelling on and the environment accompanied with it! The tokaido sen from tokyo to kyoto would be i believe one of the harder to beat rides as you meander past fuji in a section of the ride!

And  definitely a good bento set will make it even more wholesome… Till then!
